A federal judge sentenced Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old Virginia resident, to 30 years and four months in prison for funneling over $185,000 in cryptocurrency to ISIS. The funds allegedly financed combat operations and escape logistics in Syria between 2021 and 2024.

Prosecutors emphasized Chhipa’s strategic use of crypto to obscure transaction trails, marking one of the first major terrorism financing cases involving digital assets. The December 2024 conviction included charges of conspiracy and material support to a designated terrorist organization.
